First Day Of Spring!
Posted on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at 9:25 AM
Insurance Erie PA

Today marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring.  This may be difficult to tell in the Erie area, with highs still hardly above freezing.  Spring is a great time of year to take a few minutes to review your insurances.  Are you paying too much? Do you have the appropriate coverages?

Here are a few tips to ensure your home made i thrrough winter, and is ready for the summer to come:

Outside Your Home

The cold winter months can do damage to your house as well. Here are a few things outside your home that should be inspected to ensure they are in good condition:

  • Roof: Check for any damage from snow or ice, including damage from ice dams, and make any necessary repairs to reduce the possibility of leaks.
  • Gutters: Clean leaves and other debris from gutters and downspouts to keep water flowing and reduce the possibility of water damage.
  • Trees: Visually inspect trees for damage or rot, and remove (either yourself or through a contractor) any dead trees that might blow over in heavy winds or during a storm. Keep healthy trees and bushes trimmed and away from utility wires.
  • Lawn Equipment: Make sure lawn mowers, tractors and other equipment are tuned up before using. Store oil and gas for lawn equipment and tools in a vented, locked area.
  • Walkways and Driveways: Repair any cracks and broken or uneven surfaces to provide a safe, level walking area.

A little home maintenance in the spring can go a long way to keeping your home safe and secure throughout the rest of the year.

The Erie Area Has Experienced Hundreds of Ice Dam Related Claims. Here Is a Few Ideas On Ice Dam Prevention.
Posted on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 11:28 AM
Ice Dam Erie PA

Ice dams occur when ice builds up along the eaves of your roof. Ice dams form when snow and ice melt off the main part of your roof and re-freeze when they reach the eaves. This happens because the eaves (the overhangs at the edge of your roof) tend to be colder than the rest of the roof. If the ice dam grows large enough, it may prevent water from draining off the roof. The water can then back up underneath the roof shingles and make its way inside your home.

You can take immediate steps to help prevent damage from ice dams:

  • Clearing snow and ice off the roof before it melts is the best way to keep ice dams from forming. If your roof is accessible from the ground, a roof rake can be a safe and effective way to remove snow from the edges of the roof where ice dams occur.

  • If your roof is not accessible from the ground, a contractor may be able to help.

  • If you cannot safely access your roof from the ground, it is best not to try. Never attempt to climb on a snowy or icy roof, and never place a ladder on snowy or icy ground. Also, keep in mind that chipping the ice with a mechanical device can be dangerous and may result in damage to the roof.

  • Make sure to shovel around downspouts so that your gutters can drain freely. This will help prevent ice buildups in gutters.

  • Properly insulating and ventilating your attic will help reduce the chances of snow melting on the roof and refreezing at the eaves.

If you have already contacted a licensed and insured contractor to help with emergency repairs, be sure to document any expenses so they can be considered for reimbursement.

The air temps are predicted to over in the single digits this weekend, here are a few safety tips to ensure your home is protected.

•Keep the temperature inside all areas of your house from falling below 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

•Insulate unheated areas of your house, particularly the attic and crawl spaces.

•Apply plastic covering to windows to help reduce heat transfer.

•Wrap exposed pipes with heat tape or use pipe sleeves to help prevent them from freezing.

•Periodically inspect the roof drainage system for blockages or leaks.

•Keep snow accumulations to a minimum to help prevent ice dam formation.

•Use a roof rake to remove accumulated snow from areas of the roof you can safely reach. Consult a professional roofing contractor to remove snow from steep areas or areas you cannot comfortably reach. Never climb onto a snow- or ice-covered roof.
