Protect Your Family's Belongings With A Home Inventory!
Posted on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at 1:01 PM
Insurance Erie PA + Home Insurance Erie PA

After a fire, burglary or another event in which you lost possessions from your home, it may be difficult to remember the details of every one of the belongings that you have accumulated over the years. In this situation, having a current inventory of your possessions, including make and model numbers, may help you with any potential insurance claims.

Here are some steps you can use to help build your home inventory checklist.

Step 1: Take the time to walk through your property.

Compiling a comprehensive home inventory will be invaluable if you have to make a claim.

Step 2: Keep your inventory in a safe place.

·         First, take a picture of relevant rooms or items. Label pictures of rooms and important individual items with a description, including where you bought it and the make, model and serial number. Don’t forget to inventory items that may be out of sight in storage closets or drawers.

·         Second, walk through your home or office using your phone to shoot video of the contents, describing them as you go.

·         Finally, digital home inventory programs allow you to upload multiple photos of each item, including photos of the serial number, receipt and other identifying details. If you choose to create a paper version, consider storing it off-site in a safe deposit box.

Step 3: Update your inventory often.

When you make a significant purchase, add the information to the inventory while the details are fresh in your mind.

Step 4: Remember your business assets.

While most people think of their home when making an inventory, it is important to document the contents of your business, as well.

Step 5: Consider valuable items.

Valuable items like jewelry, art, and collectibles may have increased in value since you brought them into your home. Check with your agent, if you have one, to make sure that you have adequate insurance coverage for these items as they may need to be insured separately.

Winter Driving Safety
Posted on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at 12:28 PM
Auto Insurance Erie PA + Car Insurance Erie PA

Winter is still here, in NW PA. This means winter driving!  Snow, Slush or icy roads are involved in nearly one in four weather-related vehicle crashes.

If you must travel during winter weather, preparing your car in advance, knowing the forecast and driving based on road conditions are three key ways to help you drive more safely. Following are some winter driving safety tips to help you prepare for the elements – before you face them – on the road.

        I.            Preparing Your Vehicle:

a.       Keep a winter driving kit in your vehicle:

                                                               i.      Ice scraper

                                                             ii.      Snow shovel

                                                            iii.      Sand or road salt

b.      Keep windshield wipers in good condition and washer fluid full.

c.       Keep gas tank above ¼ tank.

      II.            Watching the Weather:

a.       Monitor road and weather conditions by checking local news stations or Internet traffic and weather sites.

    III.            Driving for Winter Conditions:

a.       Before you leave, clear all snow off car.

b.      Drive with Headlights on

c.       Drive slower than normal, remember speed limits are for dry roads.

d.      Leave more distance from vehicles in front of you.

e.      Avoid using cruise control on icy roads, as you want as much wheel speed control as possible.

f.        Remember bridges and overpasses freeze first.

The HMM team wishes you and your family a safe winter! Make 2019 the year you beat the statistics.
