It's National Picnic Month!
Posted on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at 12:51 PM

July is National Picnic Month and we are experiencing perfect weather for a picnic with friends and family. Sharing a picnic lunch is a perfect way to relax, but you need to take special precautions to keep food safe while away from home. Here are a few precautionary tips to keep everyone safe on your next adventure.

Maintain Food Temperatures

  • If you want to eat hot cooked food or refrigerated food on a picnic, it is very important you store food properly. Food must be either hot or cold to stop bacteria growth. If food temperatures reach between 40F and 140F you risk food borne illness.

  • Pack cold perishable foods such as raw poultry, seafood, meat, and eggs into an insulated cooler just before you’re ready to leave. Keep cooked foods and cut fruit cold, too. Ensure you add plenty of ice or several ice packs; then close the lid tightly and do not open it unless absolutely necessary. Keep the cooler out of the sun while you drive and when you arrive at your picnic spot.

  • If you intend to grill meats at the picnic site, use a meat thermometer to check it’s cooked sufficiently. Freshly cooked or reheated meat requires an internal temperature of 165 F. Don’t leave cooked meat off the heat for more than two hours either. If it is above 90 degrees, reduce the time to an hour.

    Avoid Contamination

  • A common cause of food borne illness is contamination.

  • Ensure you have clean water available and wash your hands with warm soapy water or moist toilettes before and after handling food.

  • Be sure to seal raw meats and poultry well so their juices do not drip into the cooler and contaminate other foods.

  • Cover any cut items with plastic wrap or store them in individual containers.

We Want To Raise Awareness About The Dangers of Distracted Driving
Posted on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at 11:19 AM
Auto Insurance Erie PA + Car Insurance Erie PA

Distracted drivers are 3 times more likely to cause an accident.  The HMM Team would like to help stop distracted driving by raising awareness.

A recent study from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that manual-visual tasks associated with hand-held devices, such as reaching for the phone or dialing, increased the risk of getting into a crash by three times. The study also reported that even hands-free devices involve manual-visual tasks at least half the time, which is associated with a greater crash risk.

The most common risk factors include:

  1. Texting while driving increases your chances of an accident by 23 times.
  2. Reaching while driving increases your chances by 9 times.
  3. Reading while driving increases your chances by 4 times.
  4. Grooming while driving increases your chances by 3 times.
  5. Eating while driving increases your chances by 2 times.

Please take a minute, pull over, and complete any distractions to your driving.  The life you save may be your own.

Summer is Here! Don't Fall Victim to Equipment Theft!

Summer is here, and our neighbors are starting the yard work. When the time comes to primp and prune the lawn, make sure you're taking the proper precautions to protect yourself from equipment theft! Lawn maintenance equipment and tools are an investment, but theft happens.  Here are a few simple tips, from to prevent equipment theft:

  1. Put it Inside – Sure, when you get done trimming your lawn, you might just want to leave the equipment in the yard and take a shower, and lie down. But as you learned growing up, you should put things back where you found them – in this case, put your tools in a shed, garage, basement, or even a lockable storage container. Simply putting something out of sight can be enough to deter theft.
  2. Lock it Down – If you can’t store your equipment indoors, or you have to be out of sight of your equipment trailer, lock your equipment down using chains and padlocks. Even a relatively cheap bike lock can work – loop it through the handles of your equipment, and around a post or a chain. This is a simple way to prevent theft, and one of the most reliable – thieves want to spend as little time as possible, so even a simple chain they may take them a minute or two to remove can be enough to send them packing.
  3. Pull the Plug – For larger equipment such as riding mowers, you’ll have to go even further. Putting it inside and locking it up doesn’t stop it from being a tempting target. You might need to go a step further, and pull the spark plug. By removing the spark plug, you make it impossible to start the unit, which will discourage potential thieves – you can’t exactly carry riding mowers off.
  4. Mark It or Tag It – If you have decals or other identifiers you can put on your equipment, you can mark as yours. Permanent markings can make your equipment easy to track, and can also make it hard for a thief to resell. Thieves are less likely to take something that is hard to sell. Even better, you can put a GPS tag in your equipment for tracking the units should they be stolen, making recovery easier. If you mark your equipment so that it is clear that you have GPS tracking, thieves will likely skip this equipment – that is, unless you’ve got the world’s dumbest criminals.
  5. Register Your Equipment – The dealer you purchase the equipment from should be able to register the units for you with the manufacturer. Smaller equipment can be registered through the mail, or even online. While this will not prevent your equipment from being stolen, it will make it easy to track should it be stolen and the thief tries to resell it. Plus, registration will qualify the equipment for warranties and possible rebates.

HHS Extends Transition Period For NON-ACA Compliant Group Health Insurance Plans
Posted on Monday, April 30, 2018 at 11:10 AM
Group Health Insurance Erie PA / Business Health Insurance Erie PA

On April 9, 2018, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) extended an existing transition policy for certain health plans that do not comply with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for an additional year, to policy years beginning on or before Oct. 1, 2019.

In our area, Northwest PA, health insurance issuers have the option of renewing current policies for current enrollees without adopting all of the ACA’s market reforms that took effect in 2014.

Individuals and small businesses may be able to keep their non-ACA compliant coverage through 2019, depending on the plan or policy year.  For a full review of your Western Pennsylvania business's group health insurance, give our Group Health Insurance Team a call today.  The Team's direct line is 814-455-0987 x 119.
