Posted on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at 9:43 AM
Home and Auto Insurance Erie PA

After the resent storm producing LARGE hail for many in the Erie Area, we have received many calls regarding how to approach a hail damage claim.

For CAR INSURANCE:

If you have comprehensive coverage on your auto insurance policy, filing a claim is an option.

  • The first step is to take pictures of the damage for documentation.
  • Next call your insurance company. Inform them that your car has suffered hail damage, and give them an idea of the extent of the damage.
  • After you decide to move forward with a claim, you can start looking to local body shops for estimates.
For HOME INSURANCE:
  • As with Car insurance, first document the damage. Take many pictures, and make a list of damage.
  • Second, call a contractor and obtain a quote to fix damage.
  • Next, determine if the repair costs are over your deductible.  Talk with your agent to determine if you should filie a claim.
  • If you decide to file a claim, call your insurance company and convey the damage and the estimate to repair.

As always the HMM Team is here to help!  After all, we have been helping Erie area residents since 1872!

Protect Your Family's Belongings With A Home Inventory!
Posted on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at 1:01 PM
Insurance Erie PA + Home Insurance Erie PA

After a fire, burglary or another event in which you lost possessions from your home, it may be difficult to remember the details of every one of the belongings that you have accumulated over the years. In this situation, having a current inventory of your possessions, including make and model numbers, may help you with any potential insurance claims.

Here are some steps you can use to help build your home inventory checklist.

Step 1: Take the time to walk through your property.

Compiling a comprehensive home inventory will be invaluable if you have to make a claim.

Step 2: Keep your inventory in a safe place.

·         First, take a picture of relevant rooms or items. Label pictures of rooms and important individual items with a description, including where you bought it and the make, model and serial number. Don’t forget to inventory items that may be out of sight in storage closets or drawers.

·         Second, walk through your home or office using your phone to shoot video of the contents, describing them as you go.

·         Finally, digital home inventory programs allow you to upload multiple photos of each item, including photos of the serial number, receipt and other identifying details. If you choose to create a paper version, consider storing it off-site in a safe deposit box.

Step 3: Update your inventory often.

When you make a significant purchase, add the information to the inventory while the details are fresh in your mind.

Step 4: Remember your business assets.

While most people think of their home when making an inventory, it is important to document the contents of your business, as well.

Step 5: Consider valuable items.

Valuable items like jewelry, art, and collectibles may have increased in value since you brought them into your home. Check with your agent, if you have one, to make sure that you have adequate insurance coverage for these items as they may need to be insured separately.

Winter Driving Safety
Posted on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at 12:28 PM
Auto Insurance Erie PA + Car Insurance Erie PA

Winter is still here, in NW PA. This means winter driving!  Snow, Slush or icy roads are involved in nearly one in four weather-related vehicle crashes.

If you must travel during winter weather, preparing your car in advance, knowing the forecast and driving based on road conditions are three key ways to help you drive more safely. Following are some winter driving safety tips to help you prepare for the elements – before you face them – on the road.

        I.            Preparing Your Vehicle:

a.       Keep a winter driving kit in your vehicle:

                                                               i.      Ice scraper

                                                             ii.      Snow shovel

                                                            iii.      Sand or road salt

b.      Keep windshield wipers in good condition and washer fluid full.

c.       Keep gas tank above ¼ tank.

      II.            Watching the Weather:

a.       Monitor road and weather conditions by checking local news stations or Internet traffic and weather sites.

    III.            Driving for Winter Conditions:

a.       Before you leave, clear all snow off car.

b.      Drive with Headlights on

c.       Drive slower than normal, remember speed limits are for dry roads.

d.      Leave more distance from vehicles in front of you.

e.      Avoid using cruise control on icy roads, as you want as much wheel speed control as possible.

f.        Remember bridges and overpasses freeze first.

The HMM team wishes you and your family a safe winter! Make 2019 the year you beat the statistics.

Brutal Cold Forecasted for Erie Area This Week, Are You Prepared?
Posted on Monday, January 28, 2019 at 10:02 AM
Home Insurance Erie PA + Insurance Erie PA

There are subzero temperatures forecasted for the Erie Area this week.  This is a great opportunity to remind of a few steps to help prevent, or unfreeze, frozen pipes.

As Temperatures Drop

  • Keep your house warm, and allow the warm air to circulate as much as possible. Seal drafts and keep interior doors open. If you’re going to be gone for an extended period, don’t turn off the heat. Keep it set to at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Open cabinet doors under kitchen and bathroom sinks to allow heat to reach the pipes. Be sure to move cleaners and other chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
  • Open indoor faucets, hot and cold, to allow a trickle of water. Flowing water is less likely to freeze.

When a Pipe Freezes

  • The first thing to do, faced with the telltale trickle, is try to find where the pipe is frozen. Keep the faucet open, and open other faucets in the house to determine if the problem is widespread. If it is, turn off the main water supply and call a plumber.
  • If it's a single pipe, and you can reach the frozen section, try using a hair dryer, heating pad or portable space heater – just never leave it running unattended. Keep the faucet open and work up and down the pipe, starting at the faucet and working backward to the frozen section. Apply heat until full water pressure returns, then reduce the flow to a trickle until the cold snap ends.
  • An alternative method: Wrap the frozen section with towels soaked in hot water. Don't pour hot water directly on a frozen pipe, and don't use a propane torch or other open flame.

If these approaches don't work, or if you have a leaking or burst pipe, don't hesitate to turn off the main water supply and call in a licensed plumber.
