The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015 mandates the removal of the SSN-based HICN from Medicare cards.  The purpose is to decrease beneficiaries risk to identity theft by replacing the SSN with a new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI).  The new MBI will have 11 characters and contain both uppercase alphabetic and numeric characters.

This is set to impact Pennsylvania over the next 2 months.  New Medicare Beneficiaries with April effective dates should be receiving new ID cards and MBI's immediately.  All existing beneficiaries are expected to receive new MBI's or HICN's by July 2018.

The HMM Medicare Team plans to stay ahead of these changes, and hopes for a smooth transition for all our customers.  If you have any questions, or concerns, call our Medicare Team at (814) 455-0987 x 119.
