Preparedness Month 2018 + Insurance Erie PA

September is National Preparedness Month.  Only 22% of Americans have a disaster response plan.  Are part of the 22%?

The DHS has put together a website (www.ready.gov) to assist with preparing for many types of disasters.  Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to make a plan:

STEP 1: Put a plan together by discussing these 4 questions:

  1. How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?
  2. What/Where is my shelter plan?
  3. What is my evacuation route?
  4. What is my family/household communication plan?

Step 2: Discuss and assign the specific needs and duties in your household.  Keep these factors in mind.

Responsibilities for assisting others

  1. Locations frequented
  2. Dietary needs
  3. Medical needs including prescriptions and equipment
  4. Disabilities or access and functional needs including devices and equipment
  5. Languages spoken
  6. Cultural and religious considerations
  7. Pets or service animals
  8. Households with school-aged children
  9. Ages of household members

Step 3: Fill out a Family Emergency Plan:

  1. Download a Family Emergency Plan from (https://www.fema.gov/media-library/assets/documents/133447)

Step 4: Practice your plan with your household:

  1. Practicing your plan several times annually will help in case your family needs to use it.
